More than fifteen years have passed since the creation of RepRap and more than 10 years since the establishment of Makerbot providing 3D printers with open source hardware (before moving away from this economic model), which, together with other projects, offers sufficient perspective to analyse the business models of builders of open source 3D printers. A number of projects have been subjected to more in-depth analysis, including RepRap, Prusa, Makerbot and Dagoma. By basing ourselves on the BMC template, our intention is to present the business models applied or applicable to open source 3D printers and to then discuss the usefulness of two specific resources: intellectual property (licences, patents, etc..) and the wider community.
